Carbon Dioxide Gas

Overview

The atmosphere of the Earth contains the colourless, odourless gas known as carbon dioxide. It is a greenhouse gas that, by retaining heat and preventing it from escaping into space, is essential in controlling the climate of the Earth. Yet, too much carbon dioxide can contribute to climate change and global warming.

Natural activities like volcanic eruptions, animal respiration, and the decomposition of organic materials all result in the production of carbon dioxide gas. Yet, due to human activities like the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial operations, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased, having negative effects on the environment and human health.

Chemical properties of carbon dioxide
Carbon dioxide is an inorganic substance, a colorless and odorless gas at room temperature, slightly denser than air, soluble in water, and produces carbonic acid. (Basic Principles of Carbonated Drinks)

What is the normal range of carbon dioxide concentration?
The normal concentration of carbon dioxide is 23~31mmol/L. When the concentration of carbon dioxide in the human body is in this range, it is generally a normal phenomenon.

There are numerous significant industrial uses for carbon dioxide gas, including:

1. Beverage Carbonation: Soft drinks, beer, and other carbonated beverages are all carbonated using carbon dioxide in the beverage business. Drinks get their distinctive fizz because of bubbles created when the gas is dissolved in the liquid.

2. Fire Suppression: In enclosed areas like server rooms, museums, and archives, carbon dioxide gas is employed as a fire suppression agent. The gas suffocates the fire and prevents it from spreading by displacing oxygen.

3. Food Processing and Preservation: To increase the shelf life of perishable goods like fruits, vegetables, and meat, carbon dioxide is utilised in food processing and preservation. In order to generate a modified atmosphere that protects food products, the gas is also employed in their packaging.

4. Medical Uses: Carbon dioxide gas is utilised in a variety of medical procedures, including laparoscopic surgery, where it is inflated to give a clear view of the operative site. Also, it is applied in respiratory therapy to improve breathing and lessen the signs of diseases like sleep apnea.
